Location Description

Located 33 kilometres northeast of Hamilton on State Highway 26, Morrinsville is a picturesque small town with a friendly, active community.

The last census figures show it has a town population of just over 6,000 and a ward population of near 11,000. There are around 790 businesses and over 4,000 dwellings.

The main street has been upgraded and there is a good variety of shopping available with lots of restaurants/cafes to choose from.

Morrinsville is soundly rural based (its slogan is “Cream of the Country”) and it is surrounded by dairy farms.

Large employers of the area are Fonterra, the freezing works, JD Wallaces rendering plant, Eureka Hides, Inghams (chicken processing) and Maber Motors.

There are two medical clinics and a physiotherapy clinic in Morrinsville as well as a Maternity Unit, Continuing Care Hospital, a Rest Home and Plunket Rooms.

It has four childcare centres, three kindergartens, three primary schools, an Intermediate School as well as a co-educational College – 675 pupils, Years 9 to 13.

There are eight churches and a range of service clubs.

Attractions

The town of Morrinsville was born around 1873. There was a need for housing for workers, a blacksmith shop a general store and the Jolly Cripple Hotel (later to be replaced by the Nottingham Castle Hotel) which still remains in the centre of town. The town was surveyed in 1882 and the first plan was deposited. It then consisted of only 10 streets and after WWII boomed with many new facilities required and a continuing growth today.

Morrinsville has many historic sites and the walk of around one and a quarter hour following the Heritage Trail will give you a feeling for the early history of Morrinsville.

Parks and Reserves are all within close proximity to the centre of town and offer children’s play grounds or just a tranquil stroll through the grounds. The recreation grounds offer a playground, sports fields, polo field and an Olympic size tepid pool. Ideal for a fun day out.

Morrinsville Events Centre is an indoor sports stadium. Perfect for sports games, events, and concerts. Upstairs lounge and bar facilities cater for 105 people. Available for meetings, functions and parties.

With a great country feeling the local market is held in the town on the first Saturday or every month, with the stall numbers growing rapidly since its first day in October 2006. Stall holders ply their wares, whether it is handmade crafts, preserves, artwork or produce.

Local artists are located in the three towns that form the Morrinsville, Matamata, Te Aroha triangle. The arts trail guide that is available lets you uncover the rich diversity of art in our district.

A short drive to Te Aroha from Morrinsville takes you to the charming Te Aroha Domain set in the foothills of the magnificent Te Aroha Mountain. Whether you are after a hike up the mountain or relax in the mineral pools the domain offers a unique experience.
