Location Description

Matamata is situated on State Highway 27 at the foot of the Kaimai ranges, 63 kilometres east of Hamilton. It is also only a short distance from Tauranga and Rotorua.

Surrounded by fertile farmland, it is well known for, and bases its economy on, its dairy farming and thoroughbred horse breeding.

A fabulous Green Belt surrounds two thirds of the town. This is great for picnicing or walking through during the different seasons.

Attractions

HOBBITON: visit the film site of the Lord of the Rings. Daily visits leave from the Visitors Centre.
The thermal air flows created by the Kaimai Ranges make the area one of the best in the world for gliding.
The hot mineral water of the Opal springs are sought after for their therapeutic properties.
The Firth Tower Museum showcases the area's pioneer farming heritage.
Golf - 3 top eighteen hole courses and one 9 hole course attached to the Okoroire Hotel, provide plenty of variety for the serious or not so serious golfer.
Longlands farm - third generation farmer and his attractive wife give lively commentary and sumptuous dining in a garden setting.
Firth Tower- Built in 1882 against the possible invasion of Maori tribes but never used as the local chief, Tamihana the 'King Maker' became converted to Christianity. Now a museum complex.
